"Awaken"

Nach 5 langen Jahren liegt mir hier ein erneutes Lebenszeichen der US-Metaller CATCH 22 vor. Als erstes muss man feststellen, dass bis auf  T. J. Berry (Vocals, Lead guitar) die Mannschaft komplett ausgetauscht wurde. Bedeutet solch eine Aktion bei vielen Bands den Untergang, so kann man CATCH 22 zu diesem Schritt nur gratulieren. Ausgestattet mit einer prima Produktion (der Vorgänger "Time Reveals All" war produktionstechnisch unter aller Sau !) und gefühlvollen Leadgitarren zwischen schnellen und powervollen Songs, gehört diese Scheibe zum besten, was der US-Metal Underground in letzter Zeit hervorgebracht hat. CATCH 22 schaffen als eine der wenigen Bands den Spagat zwischen traditionellem Thrash und modernen Klängen. Man bewegt sich auch öfter mal im Midtempobereich ("Awaken"), was der heavyness nur zuträglich ist und schreckt auch vor Akustikklampfen nicht zurück.. Der Höhepunkt der CD ist für mich der siebenminütige Doublebass Knaller "The Otherside", bei dem die genialen Leadgitarren besonders gut zur Geltung kommen. Der Gesang von T. J. Berry ist klasse und mehr als abwechslungsreich. Er variiert von gefühlvoll, über hardcoreartig bis hin zu Rob Halford ähnlichen Ausbrüchen. Freunde von Bands wie ANNIHILATOR, HEATHEN oder THE COMPANY sollten "Awaken" unbedingt antesten. Und die mögen wir doch alle.

After five long years finally a new sign of life of the US-Metal band CATCH 22. The first thing to discover is that T.J.Berry (Vocals, Lead guitar) is the last remaining band member. The rest of the crew has been exchanged. But in contrast to many other bands this didn’t cause the decline of
CATCH 22. Provided with a great production (the predecessor „Time Reveals All“ just sounded terrible)and emotional lead guitars this album turns out to be one of the best releases the US Metal underground brought forth in recent times. CATCH 22 are one of the few bands managing to combine traditional Thrash and modern sounds. There are several midtempo ranges as well („Awaken“) what even contributes to the heaviness of the material and the guys also do not hesitate to use acoustic guitars. But to my mind the outstanding highlight is the 7 min. long neckbreaking doublebass attack „The Otherside“ delivering the most brilliant lead guitars of this release. T.J.Berry’s vocal performance is great and very varied. It changes from emotional via hardcore like to Rob Halfordish eruptions. If you’re into ANNIHILATOR, HEATHEN or THE COMPANY check it out. And we all like these bands, don’t we?
